The Story Bridge has been lit up in different flag colours to show solidarity with nations during times of celebration and crisis. The Palestinian community has requested the Lord Mayor to show compassion and acknowledge their pain as they witness the mass slaughter of their people in Gaza, but their calls were denied.

The genocide in Gaza has continued for nearly two years, and all three levels of government are complicit whether by providing arms, offering political cover or by unashamedly ignoring the suffering of the local Palestinian community.

Lighting the Story Bridge is a small but powerful gesture. It sends a message that Brisbane recognises the humanity of Palestinians and stands against the brutal injustice unfolding in Gaza. Demand that our Lord Mayor no longer turn his back.

I write to you as a local resident deeply alarmed by what the International Court of Justice has identified as a plausible genocide in Palestine, and what leading human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Israel’s own B’Tselem, have clearly described as genocide.

A recent report by Skewering History estimates over 680,000 people have been killed in Gaza, among them 380,000 children under the age of five. In the past 23 months, more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in all other conflicts and wars in recorded history combined. More than 1,400 health workers have been killed by Israeli forces. Gaza’s children are entering a third year without education.

Australia is a signatory to the Genocide Convention, which means we have an obligation to punish and prevent genocide. Currently, Australia is not fulfilling its obligation.

I stand with the Palestinian community in this city, who are demanding that their grief and humanity be recognised.

As my local Councillor, I urge you to support Justice for Palestine Magandjin’s call to light the Story Bridge in the colours of the Palestinian flag. The bridge has been lit in solidarity with numerous ethnic groups during moments of celebration and grief. Palestinians remain deliberately excluded from that solidarity, despite enduring one of the most horrific atrocities in modern history.

This moment calls for leadership, especially as Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism continue to rise in this country, fed by silence and indifference from those in power.
